Watch What You Say
(This devotional was written by one of our incarcerated students, sharing their faith and study of God’s Word.)
I remember when I got arrested, the officer said “You have the right to remain silent, anything that you say can and will be held against you in the court of law.” But as a kid, it didn’t register at the time. Little that I know, it actually mean exactly what it said. When you open your mouth, those very words will came back to haunt you.
There are so many scriptures that warn you against your very own mouth, that I will only use a few of them.
Solomon one of the wisest man to walk on earth said this: “Thou are snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.” Pro. 6:2 Solomon also wrote this once, “Whose keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.” Pro. 21:23 I wish I could have learn that verse when I was young. I probably would have never gotten into trouble. A lot of people got into trouble just by talking too much. James said “the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.” James 3:8
But there’s good news in the gospel. The Psalmist said “set a watch O Lord, before my mouth, keep the doer of my lips.” Ps. 14:13 ‘The Lord will help us to do the right and speak right. “ Then another Psalmist wrote this “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Ps. 19:14 The psalmist knew that God would guide his mouth. But he wanted it to be pleasing in the sight of the Lor.
And this verse “I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt; Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” Ps. 81:10 How blessed we are, to know that, even though our mouths can get us into trouble, our mouths can also help us when we call upon God. Let’s just remember to watch what we say, cause our very words can hurt us or help us.
