Faith Over Fear: Trusting the One Who Holds the Future

(This devotional was written by one of our incarcerated students, sharing their faith and study of God’s Word.)

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” 2 Timothy 1:7 ESV

What an ugly and hopeless feeling fear is. It can leave us stuck in life, afraid to move forward or make a change. It can have us doubting ourselves, our worth and even at times God’s love for us.

Fear is not of God. In fact, all throughout the Bible we are commanded to not fear, to not be afraid. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 NIV

Instead of allowing fear to take hold of us, we should recognize it as an opportunity to grow in faith by giving our fear to the one who controls all – our Heavenly Father.

Fear should no longer hold us captive. It should be acknowledge and then handed over to the Lord. God has amazing plans for our lives and has promised to work all things out for good for those who love Him. How wonderful is that? With God we truly have nothing to fear.

When we start to feel afraid remember that up to this point you have made it through every single one of your bad days, God isn’t going to let you down now! He loves us and will continue to get us through this broken world.” When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior… you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you.” – Isaiah 43:2-3,4 ESV

Let us rejoice that we no longer need to be afraid! God is victorious! He knows our future and everything that lies ahead. His plans for us are greater than we can imagine. Let His love drive away our fear and be a reason to trust Him.
