Devotionals – Wooten Jierette Genetia (ICCS)

(This devotional was written by one of our incarcerated students, sharing their faith and study of God’s Word.)

Devotional Post: Psalms 63

My mother used to say that when I wake up at 3 a.m., it’s because God is speaking, and that there should be a time I set aside as sacred to God.

This scripture is one of my favorites because I relate to King David and his deep desire for a relationship with God. This passage teaches you how to begin your daily relationship with God. It says:

“O God, you are my God; early will I seek You. My soul thirsts for You in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water—my flesh longs for You.” (Verse 1)

“To see Your power and Your glory, so as I have seen You in the sanctuary. Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore, in the shadow of Your wings, I will rejoice. My soul follows hard after You; Your right hand holds me.”

“But those who seek my soul to destroy it shall go into the lower parts of the earth. They shall fall by the sword; they shall be a portion for foxes. But the King shall rejoice in God; everyone that swears by Him shall glory; but the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.”

God is good all day, every day. When the Bible says, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33), it reminds us of the importance of starting our day with God. The best way to begin your day is by praising God. The best way to start your relationship with God is by praying and meditating on His Word.

I believe my day doesn’t start correctly unless I spend time with God. My mother used to say that only what you do for God will last. She would say that if you need direction, you can turn to the Word of God and find answers and solutions to your problems. I have learned not to talk about how big my problems are, but rather to tell my problems how great, awesome, and big my God is. The ultimate goal of studying the Word of God is to build a foundation for your life, one of purpose, according to God’s plans.
