Captain No More: Learning to Lead Under Christ the King

(This testimonial was written by one of our incarcerated students, sharing their faith and study of God’s Word.)

Ever since I started work, I was always told that I had good work ethics and that managers and bosses saw great potential in me. When I would start the job I always set the bar very high. I’m a quick learner, capable of picking up patterns, taking the initiative, having a good attitude and working well with others. I got to the point when my managers would ask me if I had any interest in being a manager. Sadly in those times I turned them down because it never felt right.

After a couple of months, the effects of alcohol had changed my attendance and personality with everything and everyone in my life. But because I was such a good worker in the beginning, I was never fired for coming in late, not showing up to work at all or when I did show up, the alcohol on my breath. Honestly, I think they never fired me because they believed that that guy who they met in the beginning would come around again. He never did.

Now, I’ve always had a knack for leadership. Even as a kid I felt like I was meant to lead an army. When I spoke most could feel the confidence and strength in my voice and words. To this day many are still drawn to it. That with my good work ethics makes me feel like Captain America sometimes. I even tried enlisting in the Marine Corps, but I failed. I had the qualities of a leader, but no knowledge of how to properly utilize leadership. There was so much about myself that I didn’t know.

The Lord is my Shepherd and He has brought me to ICCS (International Christian College and Seminary). Christ has and still is leading me through the storms and fire and is showing me how He wants me to lead others through these courses of Christian Leadership. ICCS has helped me by asking questions that helps me take a closer look at scripture. My understanding, desire, thirst and hunger for the Word will never fade. A child of God never stops learning and with ICCS helping, there’s so much more that I want and am willing to learn. ICCS has taught me the responsibilities of a leader, how to handle situations keeping my heart, mind and soul on Christ, knowing there will be negative results in turning my eyes to the left or the right, knowing how to work as a team and always remembering the Lord is our true King and leader.

I would like to thank my brothers and sisters at ICCS for their faithfulness to the Lord and finding me behind these walls. The walls are down and I see a bright future.
