When God Steps In: The “But God” Moments
(This devotional was written by one of our incarcerated students, sharing their faith and study of God’s Word.)
But God
The phrase “But God” occurs approximately 50 times in the Bible. “But God” is not a special phrase, but in the story of God’s people it shows a turn of events, because of God’s providence and will for His purpose.
We use “But God” in our testimonies every day when we talk about how we were going down the wrong path, BUT GOD… Unfortunately we forget these moments when things do not go our way. All of a sudden our BUT GOD turn into, but God??? We begin to question Him and forget what He has brought us through, and how He worked it all out for our good and His purpose. That is the main point of Romans 8:28. He turns our questioning of Him-but God???- into a statement of BUT GOD!!!
My favorite scripture with this phrase is in Genesis 45:8, “And now you did not send me here, but God,” (emphasis mine). God is in complete control of our lives if we will just give over to Him and trust His ways. While God does not do the evil that brought you to where you are, He was with you the whole time. He allowed it to work together for our good, and His purpose and glory (Rom. 8:28). Too many times we begin to question God with, but God??? This is when we should be drawing closer to Him, knowing He has our best interest in mind.
We must begin to trust God to the point of knowing everything is done by His decree or that He allows it to happen for some reason only He knows. In this it should give us peace to know that the Almighty God Who is all good is doing the best for our lives! BUT GOD!!!
